AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB Nvidia vs GeForce GTX 970 4GB:
In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 4GB.
The RX 580 has a 207 MHz higher core clock speed and 40 more Texture Mapping Units than the GTX 970. This results in the RX 580 providing 71.8 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.
The RX 580 has a 207 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX 970, but the GTX 970 has 24 more Render Output Units than the RX 580. As a result, the GTX 970 exhibits a 18.6 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the RX 580. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.
The RX 580 was released over a year more recently than the GTX 970, and so the RX 580 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GTX 970.
Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn’t worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.
